Kiwanis purchases $100 worth of clothing for each of about 60 Grass Valley Elementary School Children.
Here's how it works:
Our local school district sends Kiwanis the names of 50 to 60 disadvantaged elementary school children. At 6:30 AM the children along with a parent or guardian meet us at the K-Mart parking lot. One adult, either a Kiwanian or adult volunteer, accompanies the elementary school child into K-Mart. The child’s parent does not go into K-Mart. Each adult volunteer is given a $ 100 gift card to purchase clothing and school items for each child. Many times the child and parent have gone to K-Mart and know exactly what they want. Some do not. After shopping and getting $ 100 of items, they check out at the front registers, using the $ 100 gift card. After the child comes out of K-Mart, the child usually receives a back pack, along with school supplies.
We have about 30 Kiwanians who participate in the event. Some of the adults take two or three children through K-Mart. We need adult volunteers to help us. If you’re interested, please notify Lew at 274-4455.
